Atlantis Comes Alive
At the beginning of every month, I will begin the process of drawing my conceptual art so by the end of the month I will have a complete and professional piece.
My month will begin with research, and brainstorming, deciding what concept of Atlantis I would like to represent. After I have a general idea I will design several small thumbnail sketches, no bigger than a few inches by a few inches.
The next step would be choosing one or two thumbnails and turning them into larger rough sketches, after this, if I have multiple sketches remaining I will decide between them or combine them to form several options side by side as seen in the pictures below.
This process should take no longer than the first week of the month.
Once the rough sketch is complete I will improve it and clean the lines so it is easier to see every small detail, after this I will be deciding what colors to use.
The long, difficult, and time consuming phase begins once the traditional drawing has been transferred onto my computer and into Manga Studio 5/ Photoshop and the digitizing process begins.
I will use the gray scale technique, using only shades and sculpt the subjects in my illustrations. After this I will convert it into color and add additional detail, textures, and lighting.
For at least the first few months I will be watching the concept art tutorials I’ve linked in the page above while drawing. By the end of the year I hope to be able to create concept art on my own without watching tutorials at the same time.
The digital coloring process will take me the longest, I predict approximately 12 hours of work.
Every month I will switch between character art, prop art, and environment art. On the final month, I plan to do a scenery piece with a volcanic eruption and chaotic destruction, to wrap up the end of my summative and represent the fall of Atlantis.
