My area of expertise is characters and more specifically character faces; as expected, my highest quality piece was a character concept art.

I created a layer above my line-art and put it in grey scale mode, anything that would be put on this layer would show as a shade. Using shades to color in one's art is effective because it is easier to focus on the values than if one were to use color.
After I had finished shading in grays I created a multiply layer over it, I chose a suitable skin tone and using the multiply layer the grays turned into the color while keeping the shading underneath.
I then spent a good couple hours polishing the face and adding more detail.
The hair was the easiest but most time consuming to shade.
I kept the "coat" a dull blue and put an opaque fabric texture over it.
Something small that I learned was how to filter Google images so it shows only high resolution photos. It may seem insignificant but if I am going to be borrowing textures from Google they need to match or be higher resolution than my painting and this ilter will just make it easier to find.
